Fun Fact: The first moisture barriers were simply tar paper used in the early 1900s! Modern “smart” vapor retarders can change their permeability based on humidity levels – becoming more permeable when moisture needs to escape. Some moisture barriers are so effective they have perm ratings near zero, essentially stopping all vapor transmission. Interestingly, the wrong moisture barrier in the wrong climate can actually make moisture problems worse by trapping moisture inside building assemblies!
