Equilibrium moisture content (EMC) refers to the point at which a material neither gains nor loses moisture because it is in balance with the surrounding environment’s relative humidity and temperature. At this state, the material’s moisture level remains stable under constant conditions.
In construction, EMC is especially important for wood, drywall, concrete, and other hygroscopic materials that absorb and release moisture. Wood framing, flooring, and millwork are often acclimated on site so they can reach equilibrium moisture content before installation, helping prevent warping, shrinkage, or expansion after construction is complete.
