Description
A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) is a critical electrical safety device that continuously monitors the flow of electrical current in a circuit and automatically shuts off power within milliseconds when it detects a ground fault or current leakage that could cause electrical shock. This life-saving device works by comparing the amount of current flowing through the hot (ungrounded) conductor with the current returning through the neutral (grounded) conductor, and when an imbalance of as little as 4-6 milliamps is detected, the GFCI immediately interrupts the circuit to prevent potentially fatal electrical shock. GFCIs are required by electrical codes in areas where water and electricity may come into contact, making them essential safety components in bathrooms, kitchens, outdoor areas, garages, basements, and other locations where moisture is present.
